Café Mediterranée - The Freedom Theatre
Café Mediterranée is a series of encounters with artists from the Mediterranean region and Middle-East. On 23 September, our guest will be Juliano Mer Khamis of the Freedom Theatre in Jenin on the Westbank. He will be interviewed by Chris Keulemans.
The Freedom Theatre and Juliano Mer Khamis
Juliano Mer Khamis is head of the Freedom Theatre in the refugee camp of Jenin on the Westbank. Juliano started The Freedom Theatre after the theatre his mother, Arna, founded was destroyed during the First Intifada in 2004. Jiuliano directed the moving documentary ‘Arna’s Children’ about her. After Arna’s passing away, he continues her work and has set up in the refugee camp a drama school, a multi-media learning centre and a high quality theatre group that tours a lot internationally. The arts are used as a means of coming to terms with the very violent surroundings of a Palestinian refugee camp. However, no compromises are being made on artistic integrity. Also, Jiuliano’s biography is astounding, the son of an Israeli mother and Palestian father, served with the special forces in the Israeli army, lived in Northern Ireland and Russia and has been a highly successful actor in the Israely film industry.
